ChatGPT AI persuaded me to select this domain name

Artificial intelligence has come a long way – one of the latest flavors in this field and also one of the most impactful ones being ChatGPT – developed by OpenAI.

ChatGPT can be used for a variety of purposes and topics – however, currently it is limited to text input and output.

Having been in the field of cryptocurrency and blockchains for several years, I recently developed an urge to start my own blog revolving around the topic – sharing news, analysis and insights about web3 with the world.

I quickly decided for a self hosted blog vs a hosted blog – which means more work, but also more flexibility – leading to the next step, which inspired me to write this article: Domain name ideation and top level domain selection.

Traditional domain name brainstorming and domain name selection processes are lengthy and tiresome – so why not try harnessing the power of AI, having ChatGPT propose and evaluate different choices?

Domain name ideation and top level domain selection using ChatGPT: Keyword selection

I started off with a very basic query, asking ChatGPT to provide a list of 30 blockchain and crypto related keywords:

Some of the keywords are too long or too specific, so I decided to manually deselect them and keep only the highlighted ones:

Bitcoin Blockchain Cryptocurrency Decentralized Digital asset Mining Wallet Smart contract Altcoin Ethereum Token Hashrate Block explorer ICO Distributed ledger Proof of work Exchange Stablecoin Cold storage Node Cryptography Public ledger Private key Consensus Hash function Merkle tree Whitepaper Immutable Permissionless Cryptojacking

Top level domain selection using ChatGPT

We also need to select an appropriate top level domain for the resulting domain. From my personal impression, the .io TLD is very commonly used in the blockchain and crypto space. Let’s ask ChatGPT what it thinks about the .io TLD.

ChatGPT tells us that the .io TLD is popular among startups and tech companies, relevant to the technology industry, has a clean and modern sound, is appealing to tech-savvy audiences and suited for startups and tech companies. – Neat!

Combining keyword selection and top level domain

Let’s combine the .io TLD with the previously selected blockchain and crypto related keywords and query ChatGPT again. Ideally, we want ChatGPT to check for availability as well.

So how well did ChatGPT perform here?

AssetBlock.io TokenContract.io DistributedNode.io KeyChain.io ConsensusLab.io TreeBlock.io CryptoAsset.io TokenTree.io DistributedKey.io BlockConsensus.io KeyNode.io AssetConsensus.io TokenizedAsset.io ContractLab.io DistributedBlock.io NodeKey.io BlockTree.io ConsensusChain.io TokenNode.io DistributedAsset.io

It skipped single-keyword domain names – intentionally or not – which were requested as well. Realistically, all of them are already taken anyway, so no problem.

For each proposal, it did combine exactly two keywords. Some of them sound decent, but further investigation via Namecheap reveals that they are already taken — apparently, ChatGPT is unable to check for domain availability – at least for .io domains.

Let’s see 20 more – perhaps we’re lucky.

Similar results: Some decent options, but those are already taken.

ContractChain.io TokenVault.io DistributedLedger.io BlockSecure.io KeyNodeLab.io ConsensusProtocol.io TreeCrypto.io AssetNode.io TokenBridge.io DistributedConsensus.io BlockEra.io KeyChainLab.io ConsensusGate.io TreeLab.io AssetBlockLab.io TokenKey.io DistributedAssetLab.io BlockNode.io KeyConsensus.io ConsensusTree.io

Next, I tried querying ChatGPT again, but this time including single syllables of these keywords.

Bad choice. The results seem too random and not catchy enough, so we have to try a different approach.

Adding a brand name ending to the keyword combination

I took a break and came back later with the idea of adding a common brand name ending to the domain name.

What about “-ify“?

ChatGPT is telling us that the ending “-ify” is transforming something into a particular state or condition. Popular in modern branding, particularly with technology companies, catchy and memorable. – Sounds good!

Now if we could find a crypto and blockchain related keyword combination which represents a common goal in the industry, that would be fitting.

tokenifyr.io blockifyr.io keyifyr.io seedifyr.io nodeifyr.io consensifyr.io assetifyr.io contractifyr.io distributedifyr.io treeifyr.io phraseifyr.io tokenify.io blockify.io keyify.io seedify.io nodeify.io consensify.io assetify.io contractify.io distributedify.io

ChatGPT provided some valid suggestions, but also didn’t follow the requirement of ending with “-ify” correctly. Let’s retry and remove all results ending with “r”:

Blockify.io Cryptify.io Distributify.io Nodify.io Keytify.io Assetify.io Contratify.io Consensify.io Tokentify.io Securify.io Trustify.io Decentrify.io Verifify.io Chainify.io Anonify.io Disruptify.io Validify.io Regulify.io Decryptyf.io Ledgerify.io

Now if we could find a crypto and blockchain related keyword combination which represents a common goal in the industry, that would be fitting.

ChatGPT is telling us that the ending “-ify” is transforming something into a particular state or condition.

Decentralization, one of the most common goals in the crypto and blockchain industry, used as a keyword in the domain name, combined with an “-ify”, which signifies the transformative aspect of the crypto industry, combined with the technology relation of the “.io” top level domain: A fitting and appropriate choice:

Decentrify.io

Goal reached. ✅

Domain name ideation and top level domain selection using ChatGPT: Conclusion

Admittedly, a big part of the domain name ideation process and the domain name selection process was done with manual input from me – accordingly the title of this article “ChatGPT AI persuaded me to select this domain name” sounds a bit sensationalist in hindsight. However, ChatGPT did provide some valuable feedback during the process and it also did suggest the final domain name, so all in all it was still very helpful, despite the obvious shortcomings and little mistakes.

Certainly, there is also a lot of potential for improvement of the entire domain name ideation process via ChatGPT, based on what I have tried here – ChatGPT is surely capable of providing way more assistance, if fed with optimized queries – but that’s beyond the scope of this article. Thank you for reading.
